Though times are tumultuous, if you have Netflix Instant, you have at least one thing to be thankful for: a seemingly bottomless cornucopia of streamable content. Here are ten art-related movies and shows you can watch on Netflix Instant in a daze of tryptophan and gratitude. Iris The last film by the late Albert Maysles — famed director of cinema verité classics like  Gimme Shelter  and Grey Gardens —  Iris   (2015) is a documentary portrait of nonagenarian fashion icon  Iris Apfel. Known for her layers of chunky jewelry, vibrant prints, and signature round glasses, Apfel approached fashion as an art form, and the art world treated her work as such: a 2005 show at the Metropolitan Museum of Arts Costume Institute, Rara Avis: Selections from the Iris Apfel Collection, first brought her widespread public acclaim. “Dressing should be fun, ” Apfel says in the film. “Life is short and life is grey, so you can easily dress yourself up, make yourself happy, and then you make other people happy. ” Read Hyperallergics review here and watch here. Big Eyes This Tim Burton-directed biopic tells the story of Margaret Keane (Amy Adams) the American painter famous in the 1960s for her Pop art portraits of waifish children with big Bambi eyes. Her husband, Walter Keane (Christoph Waltz) took credit for all of her work. It was only when the couple got divorced that Margaret fought for her recognition. Read Hyperallergics review here and watch it  here. Beltracchi: The Art of Forgery This provocative documentary profiles infamous German art forger Wolfgang Beltracchi, who made millions by producing knock-offs of famous artists, including André Derain, Kees van Dongen, and Max Ernst. Made by the son of Beltracchis legal counsel, the 2014 film delves into a sensational, convoluted scandal. In one scene, Beltracchi brags to a visiting curator about his facility with faking Old Masters — “Vermeer? ” “Him, too. ” “Rembrandt? ” “Any of his. ” “Leonardo? ” “Of course, hes not difficult. ”  Hyperallergics reviewer called the film “very engrossing but disorganized. ” Judge for yourself on Netflix here. The 100 Years Show Wheelchair-bound at age 101, Cuban-American artist Carmen Herrera is “very possibly the oldest contemporary artist working today, ” as Christies put it. Herrera has been painting since her youth in Cuba, but didnt achieve any commercial success until the early 2000s — after shed been working as an artist for seven decades. Recently, major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art and Tate Modern have acquired her paintings. The 100 Years Show  (2015) is a documentary profile of Herreras extraordinary life and work. Watch it  here. Je Suis Charlie In January 2015, a terrorist attack at the offices of the French magazine  Charlie Hebdo left 12 people dead.  Je suis Charlie,  a documentary directed by the father-son team of Daniel and Emmanuel Leconte, examines the events that led up to the attack. The film includes archival footage of cartoonist Jean Cabut, better known as “Cabu, ” whose drawings of the Muslim prophet Muhammad earned him the wrath of Jihadist terrorists. Finding Vivian Maier Vivian Maier, a reclusive French-American woman, worked for most of her life as a nanny and housekeeper in Chicago. She carried a camera everywhere she went. It wasnt until after her death, in 2009, that her vast body of brilliant photographs came to light. John Maloof, who discovered her photographs in a box at an auction house, co-wrote and directed  Finding Vivian Maier (2013) a documentary that uncovers her life through interviews with people who knew her. Art of Conflict: The Murals of Northern Ireland Throughout the Troubles in Northern Ireland, artists on both sides of the conflict painted political murals throughout the region. Narrated by Vince Vaughn,  Art of Conflict: The Murals of Northern Ireland  (2012) is a documentary exploring the role of these public artworks in the regions violent history. It features interviews with local muralists, political figures, mural historians, and art community members. Revenge of the Mekons The members of cult British punk band the Mekons first met as art students and Sex Pistols fans at Leeds University in 1977. Despite critic Lester Bangs calling them “the most revolutionary group in the history of rock n roll, ” the Mekons are said to never sell much more than 8, 000 copies per album and still play in clubs, not concert halls.  Revenge of the Mekons (2014) directed by Joe Angio, is a rock documentary about anti-rockstars. Since the band members never earned enough money to quit their day jobs, the film also chronicles their lives outside of music: violinist Susie Honeyman  runs a London art gallery, and a few members are accomplished visual artists. Raiders of the Lost Art British documentary TV series Raiders of the Lost Art  (2016) tells the true-crime stories of artworks that have been stolen and, in some cases, recovered. From the disappearance of eight bejeweled Fabergé eggs made for the Romfamily during the Russian Revolution to the discovery of a hoard of artwork missing since World War II, each case is illustrated with archival footage and dramatic recreations. Sky Ladder: The Art of Cai Guo-Qiang This 2016 documentary follows Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang, known for his pyrotechnic spectacles, as he creates his most ambitious project yet. Bob Ross: Beauty Is Everywhere Beauty was everywhere in 1991, when Bob Ross hosted this paint-along show, and its still everywhere, even in 2016, which, to many, has felt like “ the fucking worst year. ” Nothing like watching Bob Ross paint “ almighty trees ” and feed his pet squirrels (“Im just putting in a few little clouds down here while youre watching the squirrels, ” he says in episode one) to ease your mind. Stream 25 episodes of Beauty Is Everywhere   here. And if thats not enough viewing material for you, consult our  previous list of art documentaries on Netflix  (some of which may no longer be streamable due to the sites shifting licensing agreements.

History is not only written by people, but often times also painted by people. Throughout the annals of Chinese painting, numerous painting masters emerged to record history. These Chinese painters, whether professional artisans at court, scholar officials in their gardens, Daoist recluses in the mountains, or Buddhist monks in the temples, have all depicted the world in their eyes and minds.        Here at China Online Museum, we have selected about 100 Chinese painters from the 4th to the 21st century. This is not an exhaustive list. Nevertheless, we hope these masters of Chinese painting will give you a glimpse of the mountains, the rivers, the flowers, the people, and the time that elapsed.

I think the picture portrait is prettier than real people. MOVIES 12:25 PM PST 12/22/2017 by Fan Bingbing stars opposite Melvil Poupaud in French producer-director Charles de Meaux's film about a Jesuit painter working in the 18th-century imperial court in China. The colors blend beautifully together, as do the exquisite sets and costumes, yet the East-meets-West historical drama The Lady in the Portrait ( Le Portrait interdit) makes for a rather bland depiction of a French painter toiling in the imperial court of Qianlong Emperor, who ruled China throughout much of the 18th century. Starring Melvil Poupaud as the Jesuit priest Jean-Denis Attiret and Fan Bingbing as his royal muse, the Empress Ulanara — both real-life figures whose stories are fictionalized here — this third feature from producer-director Charles de Meaux ( Stretch) has all the ingredients for a juicy tale of art, power, concubines and Catholicism. But like the many sessions where Ulanara stands for hours as Attiret attempts to capture her beauty on canvas, the film turns into a tedious affair that becomes increasingly benign despite all the heavy themes it tries to tackle. Still, de Meaux, who also served as cinematographer, provides a fair amount of aesthetic pleasures if you're simply willing to watch the action without being drawn too far into it. Released in China last year and in a handful of French theaters this December, it's hard to see how Portrait will recoup its purported 40 million budget — although the impressive array of set-pieces at least show us where all that money went. In the court of Qianlong Emperor (Huang Jue) the women serve as either wives or concubines while the men are mostly eunuchs or soldiers. There are, however, a few foreigners permitted to roam the palace grounds, including a couple of Jesuit priests whose religious practices are tolerated and whose artistic abilities are admired by Qianlong. One of them, the talented draftsman Attiret, is asked — or rather, commanded — by the emperor to paint the portrait of the latter's young bride Ulanara, who is still trying to find her place next to a powerful husband waging war throughout China. Thus is the setup for a series of encounters between the sensitive, obeisant Attiret and the stunning if highly insecure Ulanara, who models for the priest in the hopes of pleasing Qianlong with the result. But the painting sessions prove difficult for both of them, with Attiret distracted by his subject's nosy entourage, if not by the empress herself, and Ulanara becoming more and more uncomfortable as the priest gets closer to his model. Is he falling in love with her, tempted by such proximity to the female flesh? And is she unable to cope with the fact her husband is surrounded by subservient women, some of whom could be more attractive and worthy of the crown? These two people have a lot riding on Attiret's portrait, which, when finally unveiled, is a truly haunting depiction of Ulanara's beauty, and one that's been done in a style reflecting both Western and Eastern influences (the painting does not have classic perspective, but the features of the empress are colorfully and realistically depicted. The emperor seems to admire it, perhaps a tad too much, and the work creates a ripple effect that will upend the lives of both artist and muse, sending the former into a war zone and the latter into a state of growing anxiety and eventually, madness. Yet despite the high stakes, the underlying drama is, for the most part, extremely lethargic, with de Meaux unable to extract any real tension from the proceedings. It's as if somebody slipped tranquilizers into everyone's tea in the Qing Dynasty, with lots of flatly recited dialogue and a general inertia in the action, not to mention a certain abstruseness as to each character's intentions. There are also a few unwelcome directorial touches, such as superimpositions where Ulanara comes face to face with other empresses, or sequences where drawings are inserted over the frame — corny ideas that come across as desperate, as if the filmmaker is grasping at straws. It's unfortunate because de Meaux otherwise shows a real command of his movie's craft, shooting in gorgeous widescreen compositions that often look like paintings themselves. His images are well-served by the sumptuous production design of Francois Renaud Labarthe and Jiang Quan, who rebuilt Qianlong's domain on a soundstage in Beijing, and costumes by Sandra Berrebi that deserve some kind of award. The same goes for the props and set decoration, composed of actual objects from the epoch — whether a chess set or a tea service — that are striking to behold. With so much to gaze at, and Bingbing looking her finest and definitely fitting the part, it's a pity in the end that The Lady in the Portrait doesn't add up to much more than a meticulous piece of eye candy. De Meaux is perhaps best known outside France as the producer of Palme d'or winner Apichatpong Weerasethakul, but whereas the Thai auteur's slow-cinema creations are filled with plenty of surrealism, mysticism and deep longing, this movie is slow but ultimately inept: the brushstrokes are all finely rendered but the bigger picture lacks any staying power. Jung-myeong Kee's novel then presents the hypothetical question, What if Yun-bok Shin was actually a girl dressed in men's clothes? While giving a gift is much appreciated in Asian countries as everywhere, there are some gifts that are absolute no-nos in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. In these countries, politeness, in particular, polite language, is an important part of gift-giving. It is always polite to give gifts at festivities, or when you're attending special celebrations such as a wedding or housewarming, visiting the sick, or attending a dinner with people one doesn't know well. Some gifts have subtle meanings associated with the name or the pronunciation of the name. You wouldn't want to remind a sick person about death or funerals, nor would you want to hint to people you've never met that you never want to see them again. Here are some gifts which have names with subtle linguistic impoliteness. Avoid these Chinese gift-giving blunders. Gifts with Subtle Meanings Clocks Clocks of any type should be avoided because 送鐘 ( sòng zhōng, send clock) sounds like 送終 ( sòng zhōng)  the funeral ritual. Clocks also symbolize the truth that time is running out; therefore, giving a clock is a subtle reminder that relationships and life have an end. Handkerchiefs To give a handkerchief to someone (送巾, sòng jīn) sounds like 斷根 ( duàngēn) a farewell greeting. This gift is especially inappropriate for a boyfriend or girlfriend — unless you want to break up. Umbrellas Offering your friend an umbrella may seem an innocent gesture; however, its subtle meaning is that you want to end your friendship with him or her. If it is raining and you are worried he or she will get wet, it is better for both of you to huddle under your umbrella until you reach your friends destination. Then, take the umbrella back home with you. Gifts in Sets of Four Gifts in sets of four are not good because 四 ( sì, four) sounds like 死 ( sǐ, death. Shoes, Particularly Straw Sandals Giving shoes 送鞋子 ( sòng xiézi, give shoes) sounds similar to the word for break up. Also giving two shoes sends the message that you want the person to go his or her separate way; thus, ending your friendship. Green Hats A green hat is a metaphor in Chinese 帶綠帽 ( dài lǜ mào, with green hat) that means that a mans wife is unfaithful. Why green? A turtle is green and turtles hide their heads in their shells, so calling someone a ‘turtle will get you in trouble because it's like calling the person a coward. Gifts Which Explicitly Refer to Funerals or Break-ups Towels Towels are gifts which are usually given out at funerals, so avoid giving this gift in other contexts. Sharp Objects Like Knives and Scissors Giving sharp objects that are used to cut things suggests that you want to sever a friendship or relationship. Cut Flowers Particularly Yellow Chrysanthemums/White Flowers Yellow chrysanthemums and white flowers of any kind are used at funerals, so giving white flowers is synonymous with death. Anything in White or Black These colors are often used during funerals so presents, wrapping paper and envelopes in these colors should be avoided.

Chinese Portrait a film by Wang Xiaoshuai 2019, 79 minutes Poster Synopsis From acclaimed director Wang Xiaoshuai ( Beijing Bicycle; So Long, My Son) comes a personal snapshot of contemporary China in all its diversity. Shot over the course of ten years on both film and video, the film consists of a series of carefully composed tableaus of people and environments, each one more extraordinary than the last. Pedestrians shuffle across a bustling Beijing street, steelworkers linger outside a deserted factory, tourists laugh and scamper across a crowded beach, worshippers kneel to pray in a remote village. With a painterly eye for composition, Wang captures China as he sees it, calling to a temporary halt a land in a constant state of change. Reviews "A stunning trip through modern China, a vast country with a diverse population and landscapes. " Alissa Wilkinson, VOX "A spellbinding snapshot of a time and place, both of which are rapidly disappearing. " Patrick Gamble, Kinoscope "More than just chronicling a country in transformation, Chinese Portrait signals seismic shifts in cinema as well.
